The Paper Engine:
by Aaron Fisher Have you ever noticed that card tricks aren’t as easy as they look? You see, most who sell sleight of hand don’t tell you what’s really required to become a great card magician. Aaron Fisher's book the Paper Engine does.
Let me introduce you to my friend Aaron Fisher...
A FEW WORDS FROM AARON FISHER:
Hello, my name is Aaron Fisher. I, like Lee, am full time professional magician – I make my living with a pack of cards. Ever since The Paper Engine came out, I’ve spent a good deal of my time on the road talking to magicians about how to improve their card magic.
Have you ever noticed that card tricks aren’t as easy as they look? You see, the guys who sell us sleight of hand don’t tell us what’s really required to become a great card magician. They say, “It’s easy! Just a few moments of practice and you’ll be doing sleight of hand like a pro!” Of course, you spend your money and find out the truth – sleight of hand can be pretty tough.
I worked at it for over a decade before I discovered that the real secrets to powerful, jaw dropping sleight of hand are seldom found in the magic books and videos we buy. In fact, most of the so called magic inventors we meet have only been doing magic a few years. In the old days, young magicians served as apprentices to masters – they traveled hundreds or thousands of miles to sit at the feet of REAL experts. Today, we see 17 year old kids selling us DVDS. Of course these guys think it’s easy – because they don’t do it very well. And since these ‘modern experts’ have never really studied magic with a true master, they certainly don’t know how to teach it. That’s why you find yourself so often disappointed with the quality of your sleight of hand. That’s why I wrote The Paper Engine.
If you are only casually interested in sleight of hand with cards, then The Paper Engine is not for you. Because anyone who told you that real sleight of hand doesn’t take hard work is just trying to sell you something. Magic does take hard work. But that’s not all. All the practice and dedication in the world won’t make you a true card handler without the correct information. I’m talking about real secrets.
Have you ever noticed that sleight of hand magic seems to be written in some sort of code? Sometimes it doesn’t make sense, but more often, you try it and get busted by your audience. The Paper Engine is filled with information to help you understand the way sleight of hand really works. I’m talking about the fundamental design principles that underlie all good sleight of hand. Once you learn the true secrets to eliminating tension and perfecting your focus, you’ll see a dramatic transformation in the power of your magic. Your audience will go from mildly amused, to stunned and shocked. You’ll have the secret decoder ring, and all sleight of hand will seem easier than you ever thought possible. By reading and studying the paper engine, you’ll cut years off your learning process. What took me and my friends decades to learn, you’ll accomplish in a fraction of the time.
You’ll learn powerful sleights and techniques, designed for real performance. These moves are meant to be performed surrounded by adoring fans. You’ll understand the real secrets to making these techniques successful. More importantly, you’ll learn to tell the difference between the hardcore techniques which have helped the master sleight of hand men practice their craft for hundreds of years, and the current crop of crap designed only for performance on a QuickTime viewer.
But never forget. There is no product you can buy that will do the work for you. We all learn by doing. And with the Paper Engine, you’ll learn great tricks from my professional repertoire. Not only do these tricks work, and receive great responses from real people, but more importantly, you’ll use these tricks to win fans and admirers for the rest of your life.
But most importantly, these tricks will provide exercises for your new found skills. They’ll provide an outlet for your new and unique understanding of our ancient secret art. Armed with these powerful techniques, theories, effects and presentations you’ll achieve yourdream. You’ll find yourself on the path to real mastery with cards. There’ll be no stopping you.
The Paper Engine is now in it's fourth printing, and experts worldwide agree that it’s perhaps the most significant work of it’s kind to see print in decades. When you are ready to take control of your card magic - when you’re ready to become an artist with cards, this book will change the way you think about magic.
"I've seen it for myself!! Aaron Fisher's gravity half pass is executed in the small motion of raising the deck from dealing position to your fingertips. There is NO other action! This sleight is invisible from all sides. The secretive details of this move alone have made Aaron a Neo-Master."
- Lee Asher
These are just some of the concepts you’ll master as you study the Paper Engine…
Tension Tension is the root of all our evil. Whenever we get caught, busted by our audience, you can certainly bet tension created the deed. In every sleight, easy or difficult, you can find some degree of tension. The audience doesn’t see the tension; They smell it! They know you’re guilty just like a border guard knows you’ve got a Cohiba Cuban Cigar.
Reading The Paper Engine, you'll learn about the sources of tension. We’ll talk about how to spot it, and how to eliminate it. We’ll learn which sleights encourage relaxation by their very design. Some sleights necessitate so much tension that we’ll never be able to use them effectively.
We'll learn how to recognize these sleight for what they are, and throw them away forever. Sometimes we can’t eliminate tension; we’ll learn how to cover it. Sometimes, tension can help us – we’ll learn how. Angle efficiency We live in a ‘magic club culture’. We all talk about magic with our magician friends. This affects our point of view in ways we can never understand. Our skewed perspective often works against us. We perform a trick, and get terrible results. How could this happen? The book said this idea would work. My magician friend said this idea would work! Sometimes the resources at our disposal don’t address the problems we encounter in the real world.
For example, many of us have problems performing magic surrounded. In the last century, before the advent of close up magic as a hobby, all magicians were professionals. They all performed in the real world. Those guys knew about practical technique.
These days, magic conventions are filled with guys doing moves for one or two people at a time. It’s not uncommon to see ideas demonstrated in a corner, where two walls cover the bad angles. And god forbid the spectators are sober! Many of today's hobbies technique designers don’t perform. This makes their job easy. They don't have to consider whether or not their ideas actually work.
We’ll talk about angle efficiency. When we examine a technique, we’ll talk about when and how it should be used. Does it work on stage or just close up? Can it be done surrounded, or just for one person? Can it be done for seated people, or only for a group of standing spectators grouped tightly around you? Even if the move can’t be done completely surrounded, and many can’t, can the move be covered from the bad angle? If it can, the move is angle-efficient.
The masters addressed these problems every time they performed. Today’s magicians view this discussion as an afterthought. You’ll learn to apply this thinking to everything you do. It will improve your magic.
Let’s take the Sting out of the Sting.
You’ve probably been a magician so long you don’t even remember what it’s like to experience magic. It’s been a long time for me. I know this because whenever I see a new trick that fools me I say, “Wow. That was neat. What’s next”? But that’s not how real spectators feel. To them, a strong effect can feel like a blow to the gut.
The magic you’ll learn in the Paper Engine looks incredible. Some of it uses overt misdirection to make things appear right beneath your nose. When you’re spectators experience these effects, they get shocked. Remember the feeling that first made you want to become a magician? That’s the feeling we’re talking about.
But that power comes with a price. You’re a magician. You love magic. When you first felt that rush you loved it. That’s not necessarily the standard response. A strong effect can literally knock the wind out of a person. Believe it or not, most normal people do not like a kick in the stomach. I know many world class sleight of hand men whom audiences would run across the street to avoid watching. I also know many successful, working magicianswho have more modest skills. These men don’t perform world class magic. But they make people smile, and they work all the time. It’s hard to perform powerful sleight of hand magic, but it’s even harder to perform it in such a way that people will enjoy the experience.
You'll acquire solid techniques which actually improve your card handling, such as:
-The Gravity Half Pass, The Nowhere Pass, The Out-Jog Hermann Pass, The One-Hand Popover, and The Illusion Control.
And powerful, audience tested effects including:
-Search and Destroy, The Omen, The Standing Challenge, Fisher's Favorite Inversion, and The Revolution.
You’ll learn how to take the sting out of the sting. We’ll talk about techniques to apply after the magical punch, when your audience stands exposed before you. They’re sensitive. They’ve had a personal, powerful experience. You must consider next actions very carefully. Your next words will either bring the audience closer to you, or push them away. If you make the wrong choice, or no choice at all, you'll never win them back.
