Original question posed: What should you do when you've performed your heart out for a group of people, only to receive nothing in the way of a tip at the end of the performance?

I hand out 2 business cards to every adult, and then tell them I usually entertain for lots of companies.

If they should hear of anything, please pass my card around.

In addition to that, I am also invited to perform at a lot of family engagements...weddings, birthdays...divorce parties.

Yes, I do say that and it gets a big laugh.

If I don't get the tip, I really try and sell them my services, or let them try and do it for me.

Well seeing as how I am only an amateur/hobbyist magician I'm not really sure how to approach this issue. But my years of other types of performance tell me that tips should never be expected.

They are signs of appreciation from your audience.

Different audiences show different types of appreciation. However if I really wanted to send a message to that group, I'd thank them for watching me perform and for the accolades they sent my way.

Then I'd move to another group some what close to them and do more magic for them. If this group tips and you are close enough to members of your previous audience you might get reproached by your original audience, not to see more tricks, but merely to receive a hand shake with some green paper as well.

I've noticed that tipping is kind of like a quick spreading virus Once one person is seen doing it others are likely to follow. In the end you should never bank on it, cause some days you'll kill and not get a dime other days you'll be so so and walk away with loaded pockets.

Take the good and the bad and enjoy why you got into magic in the first place - The love of the art.

I've been table hopping for over 30 years and I've got the perfect way to deal with a table who stiffs you after you've given them a flawless performance. I just put on my most genuine smile, nod and say, "Thank you very much", just as if they had tipped me a Ben Franklin.

I've discovered that thanking the folks ahead of time is the most influential thing I could do to trigger their "tipping" instinct. In my opinion, because of this "positive expectancy", often people have sent their waitress over to me with a nice tip after I had left their table.

Almost as a by-product, the second thing this does for you, is to send you to the next table with a smile that they too can see is genuine, thus starting your next set off on the right foot.

So simple, and yet so powerful.
