Traveling on the Road:

My adventure with Paul Wilson and some of the finest magicians on the west coast

I have been doing some traveling lately, and it reminded me of the traveling and filming of 'Hit the Road'. In honor of this, for the next month, you will receive several mails from me filled with tips and tales for everything from traveling with a bunch of magicians to performing for the stars.

All of these anecdotes and tips were inspired by or conceived during the filming of 'Hit the Road'. You will not only enjoy and make use of the tips, but you will discover pieces of trivia you never knew existed about 'Hit the Road'.

All of these tips can be employed on your excursions to magic conventions, lectures, or any jam sessions that takes place out of the area in which you live. After we discuss traveling tips, I thought you might like to know about something on 'Hit the Road' that your friends may have missed.

Now, let’s talk about traveling, Hit the Road style. I have three recommendations for making your trip both smooth and memorable:

  1. Always travel with people you enjoy. Well...always, unless you are being paid to travel with R. Paul Wilson. No, seriously the trip will go by much more smoothly if you respect each others' boundaries, both physical and mental. Concentrate on helping everyone you travel with have a good time, and you will automatically have a better time yourself.

  2. Space is a necessity. Don’t bring your black-art well table if the car is already packed. Paul Wilson understood this concept – He avoided bringing bulky suitcases – he only wore a kilt. An admirable feat considering the cold, San Francisco nights. (I have no smooth way to transition from Paul’s pasty-white, Scottish legs to my next tip on how to get to where you need to be going.)

  3. Get directions in advance. AAA, road maps, and all other printed materials are great. But, nothing beats five minutes on the internet at www.mapsonus.com Print the directions and give them to the biggest loudmouth. You know, the one with the expert, backseat navigational skills. Give him a role and there will be less complaining.

Did it seem that Paul, Nathan, and I had a lot of fun making Hit the Road? We had more fun than you think we had. Hours of laughing on and off camera led to great stories within the stories. Would you like to know a great piece of trivia about filming at the Magic Castle?

Do you remember the scene where Paul and I stole Vernon’s ashes?

By the way the Hit the Road was edited; Vernon’s ashes appear on camera BEFORE and AFTER we steal him. Go back and watch it again to see for yourself. Vernon’s ashes in the cigar box appear ALL OVER Hit the Road.

For instance, Paul is holding the box of ashes while we are on the magic carpet ride. Go look for more…I promise you will have hours of entertainment “Finding Vernon”.

I hope you have enjoyed some of these tips and trivia about Hit the Road. I know most of you already own Hit the Road, but if you have no clue what I am talking about when I say Hit the Road, click here.

Speak to you again soon.

Cheers,
Lee Asher

PS. You ever find yourself on the Road with a bunch of magicians looking for food at 3am? Next week will be of particular interest to you. Also, look for trivia about the Krispy Kreme scene...

Asher's Legacy:

Raised by a semi-professional sleight of hand artist, I was born into the art of magic. From that young boy understanding his talents along the journey to where I am now, it's been my duty to bring the most visual magic I can to the public eye.

I have been interested in the art of magic for over 20 years, and have been performing professionally for half that time.

My raw visual style of magic is easily recognized and universally acknowledged. >>
